On the Tools menu, click Trust Center, and then click Add-ins. In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable or disable and note the add-in type located in the Type column. Select the add-in type in the Manage box and then click Go. Click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings, and then click Trusted Locations. Under Path, click the trusted location that you want to change. Click Modify, and then click OK.

Troubleshoot co-authoring

Here are some things that can cause problems when trying to co-author files and documents.

  • The file is using Information Rights Management (IRM) or Digital Rights Management (DRM).

  • The file is checked out. Requiring check out can cause this.

    For more info on this setting, see Set up a library to require check-out of files.

  • The file is encrypted.

  • The file format is not supported. Only modern formats including .docx, .pptx, and .xlsx file formats are supported. You can't co-author with Office 2007 or earlier format, .rtf, or other formats. In most cases, you can save the unsupported file format in the supported format from within current versions of Word or PowerPoint.

  • The file is marked as final. The file owner has decided to stop the process of editing or co-authoring the file and the file is now read-only.

  • Blue question mark icon microsoft office mac. Certain Office group policy settings prevent co-authoring including the following: Disable Automerge Client Policy, Disable Co-Authoring Server Policy, and Disable Co-Authoring Client Policy.   • The file contains an ActiveX controls.

  • You're using Office 2007 or older. Also if someone else is opens an Office 2007 document, the file is now locked so nobody else can edit it.

  • You're trying to co-author an Excel workbook with a version of Excel that doesn't support co-authoring. For more information on which versions support it, see Collaborate on Excel workbooks at the same time with co-authoring.

  • You're trying to co-author an Excel workbook on a SharePoint On-Premises site. If you are not sure if your site is an On-Premises site or not, ask the person in charge of your site, or your IT department.   • The file contains an unsupported object, such as an Ole Object, SmartArt graphic, chart, or Ink object. Try opening a version with an object to see if it's blocking co-authoring.

  • The Word document uses master documents with subdocuments, contains HTML Framesets, or is being published as a blog.

  • The Word document does not have the Store random numbers to improve Combine accuracy check box selected. Word adds random numbers to saved documents to track related versions. To check this:

    1. Click the File tab on the ribbon, click Options to display the Word Options dialog box.

    2. Click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings to display the Trust Center dialog box.

    3. Click Privacy Options, and then under the Document-specific settings section.

    4. Make sure the Store random numbers to improve Combine accuracy check box is selected.

If you are unable to save a document in Microsoft Word, your computermay have a macro virus. Microsoft Word documents can usemacros, which can potentially carry these viruses. Tominimize this possibility, activate the built-in macro protection toolby following the instructions appropriate to your version of Word:

Word 2010 and 2007 use a feature called the Trust Center to manage macrosecurity settings. To change your macro security settings:

  1. In Word 2010, from the File menu, select Options.In Word 2007, from the Office Button menu, select WordOptions.
  2. Click Trust Center, and then click Trust CenterSettings. A new page will open.
  3. Click Macro Settings on the left, and then select fromthe following security levels:
    • Disable all macros without notification will allow onlymacros installed in trusted locations to run. Any other macros, signedor unsigned, will be disabled.
    • Disable all macros with notification will prompt you tochoose whether or not a macro can run.
    • Disable all macros except digitally signed macros allowsmacros signed by trusted publishers to run automatically, prompts youfor signed macros from other publishers, and prevents unsigned macrosfrom running.
    • Enable all macros allows all macros torun. UITS does not recommend this setting, because itallows potentially dangerous code to run without warning.

Word 2011 for Mac OS X

When enabled, the Word macro virus protection tool willdisplay a warning message when you attempt to open a file withembedded macros. The alert will allow you to selectwhether or not to open the document, or to open it with macros disabled.Disabling macros is a good idea unless you have been notifiedthat the document has macros and you are aware of their function.

Note: If you close a file and reopen it, or if youopen an additional file with macros, you will get the same warning,and you must disable macros again.

To enable the virus protection tool:

  1. With a document open, from the Word menu, selectPreferences...
  2. Click Security, and then check Warn before opening afile that contains macros.
  3. Click OK.
